A recent study of over 14,000 subscribers to Consumer Reports® magazine ranked chiropractic the top choice to alleviate lower-back pain. The study shows that ‘hands-on’ treatment for low-back pain ranked first categorically, with chiropractic being the favored treatment option with 58% of the patients stating they were “highly (completely or very) satisfied” with their treatment. In order of ranking, massage therapy was ranked second for treating low back pain followed closely behind by physical therapy in the “hands-on” treatment category. Overall satisfaction in treating low-back pain showed once again that chiropractic was the favored choice followed by physical therapy and acupuncture.
While medication continues to be on the rise for treatment of aches and pains, the study shows minimal results for over the counter medication. Of the 14,000 individuals surveyed, approximately 70% of them used over the counter medications (NSAIDS; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Of those individuals who used over the counter medication, only 22% claimed that the drugs were helpful.
